The San Diego Padres and the Miami Marlins meet in the rubber match of their three game set in MLB action(mlb championship rings for sale) from Marlins Park on Thursday.
The San Diego Padres will look to win the set after evening the series up at one win apiece following a 3-2 win in game two on Wednesday. Austin Hedges had a home run and two RBIs while Greg Garcia went 2 for 4 with an RBI of his own to round out San Diego’s scoring as a team in the win. Eric Hosmer went 2 for 4 with a double while Manuel Margot added a two-bagger of his own. Manny Machado also had two hits while Chris Paddack chipped in a base hit to cap off San Diego’s offense as a team in the victory. Paddack got the win to improve to 6-4 on the year after giving up just one run on one hit while striking out eight over 7.2 innings of work. Kirby Yates closed out the 9th for his 31st save of the season. Dinelson Lamet will start game three and is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA and 14 strikeouts this season. This will be Lamet’s second career start against Miami.
The Miami Marlins will look to bounce back and win the series after dropping game two on Wednesday. Starlin Castro went 2 for 4 with a home run and both Miami RBIs while Bryan Holaday added a base hit of his own as the Marlins cranked out just three hits as a team in the losing effort with the rest of the team went 0 for 25 with 10 strikeouts in the defeat. Trevor Richards took the loss, falling to 3-11 on the year after allowing three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out five over five innings of work. Caleb Smith will start the finale and is 5-4 with a 3.46 ERA and 94 strikeouts this season. In his career, Smith is 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA and 17 strikeouts against San Diego.
San Diego(championship rings) is 1-10 in Lamet’s last 11 starts and 1-6 in their last 7 games against the NL East while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 games overall. Miami is 4-1 in Smith’s last 5 starts against the NL West and 6-15 in their last 21 home games while the over is 6-0 in Smith’s last 6 starts against a team with a losing record.
The Padres are probably the better lineup here and are the more consistent team offensively despite their inconsistencies in the win column, but I’m not sure that Lamet is all the way back just yet. Lamet has allowed seven runs in ten innings across two starts for the Padres this season. Smith has been one of the better starters for the Fish this season, and has had the majority of his success at home where he’s gone 4-1 with a 2.04 ERA this season. I think the Marlins can rebound behind Smith here, so I’ll side with Miami in the finale on Thursday.
