The Mets and Angels general managers have agreed on a trade.
Mets receive
Jonathan Villar, 2B, MIL 2018/1.53 2019/ARB2 2020/ARB3 2021/UFA
Angels receive
Robert Gsellman, SP, NYM 2018/1.02 2019/2.04 2020/ARB1 2021/ARB2 2022/ARB3 2023/UFA
Denard Span, CF, TB 2018/9 2019/TO12 2020/UFA
Mets pay 4,5 m salary of Span´s contract in 2018
Both teams decided to take on risks on talented players who underperformed last year. Villar was nothing short of spectacular in 2016 but disappointed in dramatic fashion last season. There is hope for a rebound but at least he will serve as a valuable depth piece in the Mets infield after the departure of Javier Baez. On a personal note I always had a soft spot for Jonathan Villar since he led my redraft team to the championship two years ago. Young age, his cheap contract and its length added to his attractivity.
Letting Gsellman is not easy because I am convinced that he will play a decent role in the real life Mets rotation next year but since I have 10 potential opening day SP on my current roster it was a strategic move to trade from strength here. Span is a solid but unspectacular player which LAA can slot into the open spot in CF. Since I want my MLB roster to be younger and more explosive Span was no part of my plans going forward. Covering some of his 2018 salary helped to secure the deal.
The Mets are especially happy to have finalized the first trade with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after talking about several trade options for many times. We wish Robert and Denard a great time in sunny Orange County.
Welcome to New York, Jonathan and let´s go Mets!
