The general managers of the New York Mets and the Arizona Diamondbacks would like to announce the following deal.
The Mets receive:
Justin Upton, LF, LAA 17/22.13 18/22.13 19/22.13 20/22.13 21/UFA
Matt Davidson, 3B, CHW 17/1.53 18/ARB2 19/ARB3 20/UFA
The Diamondbacks receive:
Matt Kemp, RF, LAD 18/21.5 19/21.5 20/UFA
Yandy Diaz, 3B, CLE 18/0.5 19/1 20/2 21/ARB1 22/ARB2 23/ARB3 24/UFA
Micker Adolfo, RF, CHI 0.2 Prospect
Ryan Helsley, SP, STL 0.2 Prospect
Jamie Barria, SP, LAA 0.5 Prospect
Yu-Cheng Chang, SS, CLE 0.2 Prospect
After the shocking departure of George Springer all the Mets fans wanted for christmas was a new bonafide slugger to complement their young and dangerous rotation. Enter Justin Upton. He will be the new face of the franchise for years to come. Upton didn´t come cheap though.
Matt Kemp still has some thunder in his stick when healthy but had to be moved to stay under the salary cap. Yandy Diaz is a tremendously talented 3B who we had high hopes for. His loss hurts. Yu-Cheng Chang is Cleveland´s #5 ranked prospects - a middle infield power hitter in the making. Jaime Barria and Ryan Helsley are the best young arms in the Mets Minor Leagues - both might reach the Majors in 2018. Micker Adolfo is another part of the package the Mets trade away. Last year he was one of the best players in the White Sox loaded Minor Leagues. His star is rising fast.
In order to make this deal a fair one the Mets asked for Matt Davidson to be added to the mix. Matt can play two positions, just hit 26 homeruns in 116 games and is only 26 years old with upside. Matt will take over Yandy Diaz spot in the Mets depth chart and is going to add some insurance at 1B if Healy should go down.
We thank the Diamondbacks for the trustful and entertaining trade talks and wish Matt, Yandy, Micker, Yu, Jamie and Ryan all the best with their organization.
Welcome to New York Justin and Matt!
