- Jose Peraza, 2B/SS, CIN - 0.51/17 1.02/18 2.04/19 ARB1/20 ARB2/21 ARB3/22 UFA/23
- Alex Avila, 1B/C, DET - 0.5/17 UFA/18

- Greifer Andrade, SS, SEA - 0.2 minors
The Pirates receive: - Trevor Cahill, SP, SD - 1.75/17 UFA/18
- Rajai Davis, LF/CF, OAK - 6/17 UFA/18
- Samir Duenez, 1B/3B, KC - 0.2 minors
- Oscar Mercado, SS, STL - 0.2 minors
- Jorge Alcala, SP, HOU - 0.2 minors
- Jose Paulino, SP, CHC - 0.2 minors
The Brewers continue to make moves prior to the trade deadline to fortify the roster and push for the 2nd wildcard. This trade is especially beneficial, however, in that it will help years into the future as well. Also, there's still a couple weeks before the deadline so I have time to evaluate my roster and it's chances for the rest of the year.
Trumbo is a bonafide masher and will provide some thump to the lineup. Peraza is a young building block and should retain dual eligibility next year so that's a bonus. Avila is having his best season in several years and he'll provide good depth at both 1B and C, even if he's not retained beyond this year. Vargas and Andrade are years away but look like good young players who have considerable upside.
Once Desmond, Hernandez and Turner come back from the DL the Brewers will have one of the deepest offenses in the league.
Giving up Cahill was a difficult decision because he's having such a great year and will have such a cap-friendly extension at the end of the year. With that said, he's a known injury risk and I'd rather get something for him and let someone else bear that risk. Rajai hasn't lived up to expectations but has come on of late. He hasn't seen much playing time on the team lately so moving him wasn't all that difficult, especially given his contract situation.
The Brewers were looking forward to seeing Duenez, Mercado, Alcala and Paulino make their debuts with the major league club one day but it wasn't meant to be. The club would like to thank them for their contributions to the organization and wish them well with their new club. Best of luck to Cahill and Davis as well.
Thanks to the Pirates GM for the continued trade talks and best of luck going forward.

The Pirates have decided they are sellers as the deadline approaches. It was a tough decision because some of the young players we weren't counting on had really come on strong. But with Michael Taylor headed to the DL and the pitching we went out and acquired not panning out we had to move some of our pieces in hopes of building a brighter future.
Signing Al Avila early in the year was a great play for us. He achieved beyond even our wildest imaginations. I hope he continues his good play for the Brewers and earns another contract. Mark Trumbo was originally added to the organization in the hopes that he would garner 1B eligibility. That never happened and his bat never came around. He is relatively cheap the next few years and hopefully he bounces back. Jose Peraza has been a disappointment to the organization as a hole. He just didn't flash the steal upside or average upside we saw briefly a year ago. We don't believe he is the long term solution at 2B.
Paulino and Alcala will add depth to the organizations' collection of young arms. Hopefully some of them will pan out sooner rather than later. The extensive scouting we did makes us believe that Alcala will be a front of rotation guy. Paulino will probably end up in the bullpen but there is hope that he could be a back of rotation pitcher in a fix.
We are really happy to add Mercado and Duenez. Both should be in the majors before too long. Hopefuly Aledmys Diaz continues to take a crap and we see Mercado in September. We are hoping that he may make the move to 2B if Diaz returns. Duenez is a corner infielder with some athleticism that we think translates nicely to the next level.
Rajai Davis will platoon with Altherr in CF until we can get M.A. Taylor back in the fold. He is on the block as of this moment. The target here for us was Trevor Cahill. We are believers in his stuff. He is also somebody we can lock up for a long time at a cheap rate. We hope that he will begin next year as the number 2 starter behind Chris Sale.
Passing up on Andrade and Vargas was difficult. Andrade is going to be a fine SS before it is said and done but we feel the Corey will be there for a long time. Hopefully in 4-5 years the Brewers will be having two fine options in Andrade and Vargas.
We would like to thank the Brewers for their hard work on getting this done. Hopefully this allows them to make the move they need to enter a playoff race. We want to assure our fans that we still feel we are in a good position going forward.
