The Minnesota Twins would like to thank their fans during this past season. It was an exciting year for Minny fans. We went into the year as one of the favourites to win the World Series after losing the previous year in 7 games (after being up by a commanding 3-0 lead). We doubled down in the off-season and acquired the likes of Max Scherzer to replace a departing Clayton Kershaw, JT Realmuto, Raimel Tapia, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Kenley Jansen and Michael Conforto in the off-season. During the year we also added Eduardo Escobar to replace a struggling Hiura, Kyle Hendricks to replace an injured Dustin May, Johnny Cueto and flipped Ian Happ/JD Martinez for Luis Robert.
Needless to say we thought we had a strong chance. Especially after finishing the regular season almost 700 points above the 2nd place team- if monthly point total wins were still a thing we would have won 3/5 regular season months. One thing that we didn’t plan for- our star ace Jacob DeGrom going down for the year after looking like an NL favourite to win the MVP. Yeah, he was destroying Kershaw’s numbers when he won it. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. We ran into a formidable opponent in LA and couldn’t win the AL pennant.
Now fans are wondering what’s next for Minny?
Truth be told, there’s no clear direction coming from management. There’s a lot of speculation that Minny tries one last time for a chance at an elusive championship before starting a semi-rebuild. Other experts think it’ll start this off-season.
There’s rumour of higher priced, yet controllable vets, being on the block for younger, cheaper talent or minor league studs.
Names like:
- Jacob DeGrom (2 years / 29.5 and 36.9)
- Freddie Freeman (2 years / 24 and 30)
- Michael Conforto (1 year / 7.8)
- Hyun-Jin Ryu (2 years / 14.25 and 19)
- Kike Hernandez (2 years / 8 and 8)
- Jose Ramirez (2 years / 11 and 13 TO)
- Eduardo Escobar (EOS extension)
Are some of the names hitting the rumour mill early. These guys could definitely turn a good team into a great team overnight.
Regardless of the path the Twins choose, the future does look bright. Dustin May, Dylan Cease, Dinelson Lamet, Bo Bichette, Luis Robert and Alex Kirilloff lead the group of youth that will help carry this team throughout the next few years.
Twins management are hopeful that this isn’t the beginning of the end.
