The Brewers and Reds would like to announce a rare intra-division trade, and it's a doozy!
Brewers receive:
- Matt Olson, 1B, OAK - 20/$2.55 ARB1
- Michael Conforto, OF, NYM - 20/$7.8 21/$7.8 22/$7.8 23/UFA
- Charie Morton, SP, TB - 20/$15.75 21/UFA
- Touki Toussaint, P, ATL - 20/$0.75 TC2
Reds receive:
- Frankie Montas, SP, OAK - 20/$1 TC3
- Dinelson Lamet, SP, SD - 20/$1.89 ARB1
- Luke Voit, 1B, NYY - 20/$1.84 ARB1
- Will Smith, C, LAD - 20/$0.75 TC2
- Evan White, 1B, SEA - $0.3 prospect
The Brewers barely missed the playoffs last year and don't want that to happen again in 2020. This move was made expressly with an eye to the postseason. We gave up 5 quality, cheap, young pieces for 3 proven vets in Olson, Conforto and Morton. We were especially concerned with giving up the pitching so we were able to get Touki added in the deal to give us some potential long-term return in that regard since Morton will be a one-year rental. Olson and Conforto solidify our 1B and RF positions, respectively.
We hated having to give up Smith (who had been recently acquired) and White (who just signed a long-term deal IRL) but with Sean Murphy and now Olson in tow we hope to have those positions covered for years to come. Hopefully we can recover on the pitching side long-term, but right now we are trying to win a championship.
Thanks to the Reds for the deal. You got a lot of nice, young pieces.
To the rest of the league, beware! Here we come!

Here at the Reds front office, we are eager to announce our blockbuster trade with our hated division rivals the Brewers. We feel that we definitely reached deep in our pockets for this deal from our on the field product, at the same time we feel that the team control and cash savings put us in a position to still compete this year and beyond. We have a more salary balanced roster and really love the talent we received back.
The off-season is underway and we appreciate the Brewers for negotiating this deal.
