The Baltimore Orioles(Baltimore Orioles championship rings) will travel to Yankee Stadium on Monday evening as they prepare to open a three-game series battle versus the New York Yankees.
The Yankees(New York Yankees championship rings) suddenly find themselves in second place in a suddenly competitive AL East. New York enters with a 24-16 overall record, just a half-game back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the top spot in the division. They should be able to make up ground in the division race against an Orioles team that is already 10.5-games back with a 14-26 record. Will the Yankees be able to stay hot against the lowly Orioles on Monday?
Baltimore is scheduled to hand the ball to right-hander David Hess, who continues to struggle with his consistency at the MLB(championship rings) level. Hess owns a career 4-14 overall record and a 5.03 lifetime ERA in 29 appearances (26 starts). Back in the rotation in place of the injured Alex Cobb, Hess will have to find a way to be better on the mound for the Orioles. The 25-year-old has stumbled since tossing 6 ⅓ no-hit innings on the road versus the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing three runs or more in five of his next six starts (0-4 with a 7.27 ERA), while completing five innings or less in all but one of those outings. Hess battled command issues in his last start, issuing four walks and allowing two home runs in an 8-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox, but managed to escape with a no-decision for his efforts. He finished with three earned runs on three hits in four innings of work and comes in with a 1-4 record and a 5.50 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) this year. The scary part for Hess is that he’s actually benefited from a dangerously low .227 BABIP and his 6.46 FIP suggests his numbers could get even worse before his tenure as a starter comes to an end.
Hess has already made one relief appearance and one start versus the Yankees this season. He tossed two scoreless innings against them in relief on March 28 and allowed four runs on five hits and three home runs in a 15-3 loss against them on April 7. In his only start versus the Yankees last season, Hess surrendered two runs on four hits in five innings of work at Yankee Stadium.
According to Baseball Savant, the current Yankees’ roster is batting .333 in 33 plate appearances versus the Orioles’ right-hander. StatCast projects them for an expected batting average of .345 and an expected slugging percentage of .752 off of Hess heading into Monday’s matchup(world series rings for sale).
