The Brewers and Cardinals have pulled off a rare intra-division trade!
The Brewers receive:
The Cardinals receive:
As part of this deal the Brewers will extend Sano's contract 4 yrs + a 5th yr TO. That will be posted in the appropriate section of proboards as well.
Sano was originally thought of as our 3B of the future but there always seems to be something going wrong with him. If it's not his conditioning it's an injury question. He's currently recovering from an achilles injury suffered during a team celebration. Really? Trumbo is nearing full health and could have a decent year. Maybe. But he plays on a horrible team and always seems to be dinged up. So he's a bit of a question too. And we likely were not going to re-sign him after the year given his age. Ellis looks to be a decent young 3B in the top third of the ARI farm system. He has some promise but was expendable given the depth we have at 3B in our farm.
The main reason to do this deal was getting Puig. We think he could have a career year in the hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park. He's a bit more expensive than we'd like but should be worth it. We just have to decide if we want to go ahead and extend him or ride it out and flip him during the season. Will have to decide quickly though with the season upon us. We were also glad to acquire Difo. He doesn't have a full-time gig in Washington, but does a little bit of everything and will be playing all over the field. The position eligibility could be useful and he could step right in given an injury.
Thanks to the Cards for a quick deal. Literally, like less than 5 minutes. Best of luck with Sano. Well, not too much luck since we'll still be going up against each other.
