Since taking over, one of Dodgers GM's first goals was to acquire a top tier SP to lead the franchise for the near future. With Indians stable of top SPs, they were an ideal trade partner.
The opportunity to acquire Cole, in our evaluation one of the top 5 SPs, was enough to part with Glasnow and Castillo. Dealing Glasnow was tough because he has been on my radar since he debuted ahead of Jameson Taillon, but ultimately his mixed results thus far was one of the main reasons for including in this deal. The Rays may turn Glasnow into the pitcher he could be, but Dodgers GM seized the opportunity to acquire Cole.
Castillo, although a quality young SP, pitches in Cincinnati, one of the most hitter friendly ballparks around, and even though he has electric stuff, the trade off of Straily pitching in Marlins Park, a notoriously pitcher friendly park that only the hulking Giancarlo Stanton could hit 50 out at, against Castillo pitching in Cincy was enough to get the deal for Cole done.
Acquiring Cutch in this deal also fills the RF need (and likely LF eligibility to gain this year). With the Phillis recent signing of Harper and Realmuto, Phillis lineup is expected to be potent, and whether Cutch hits leadoff or 6th in the lineup as expected, we expect his production this year to exceed expectations. While Robles has potential to generate similar points as Cutch, Dodgers have Bellinger to man CF until Senzel gains CF eligibility shortly into the season.
The addition of Hedges to the deal only added to the flexibility of Dodgers lineup as we now expect to have any platoon or catcher sharing responsibilities in San Diego covered and will get a full 162 games of quality production from the catcher spot.
Thanks to Indians GM for working through numerous iterations of this deal. While trade discussions started out in general terms, both GMs hammered out the details over the course of 3-hours into the wee hours of the California morning/early morning hours in the UK.
Dodgers are excited to have Cole as the leader of the SP staff for years to come and are looking forward to solid contributions from Cutch, Straily and Hedges.
Best of luck to the Indians and their youth movement
