The Padres and Mariners made the following trade:
Padres trade:
Eugenio Suarez 3B, CIN - $5.5 M ARB1 Gage Canning, CF, WAS - .25 prospect Bryson Brigman, SS, MIA - .20 prospect
Mariners trade:
Ozzie Albies, 2B, ATL - $1 M TC2
San Diego saw Eugenio Suarez as a long-term asset with the club and the farm system is already weak so it was difficult to deplete it even more with this deal. However, the opportunity to acquire a talented young player like Ozzie Albies at a position of weakness was too good to pass up. Salary and team control played a factor as the Padres were over the cap before making this deal and now have some breathing room while obtaining two additional years of team control on what we hope is a cornerstone player. Albies' cold 2nd half is a concern but the Padres are confident that he will, at a minimum, be a solid major league contributor for years to come even if he never repeats his torrid first half. For the Mariners, they were looking to fill a position of need while adding depth to their farm system and they certainly did that with Suarez who is entering his prime and will be affordable for 3 more years while providing 30+ HR/100 RBI production. Canning is young but is intriguing. Brigman could make the show in 2019 on a threadbare Marlins team so he could return value very soon.

Padres really hit the nail on the head in his explanation. I lose a very young talented player in Albies but get an extremely under rated player entering his prime as well as a couple of young specs to add to my farm.
I have cap space and love what Suarez brings to the table. This was a no brainer for the Mariners.
