Mets trade:
Andres Gimenez, SS, 0.2 (Prospect)
Anthony Gonsolin, SP, 0.2 (Prospect)
Jeremy Eierman, SS, 0.3 (Prospect)
Nationals trade:
Stephen Strasburg, SP, 35 2019/25 2020/23 2021/15 2022/32 2023
Nationals cover 50% of 2019 salary, 5M of 2020 salary, 5M of 2021 salary
The managers of both teams were engaged in trade talks over several different scenarios for weeks. The Mets problem was the limited payroll in combination with Strasburg´s large salary which put our talks on hold some days ago. To be honest only after checking back with the commish team I realized that it was possible to cover more salary than I originally thought. After clearing that hurdle things heated up again and when the Nationals GM provided me with a list of prospects that he would like to get in return for Strasburg we quickly came to an agreement.
I went into the offseason with the goal of building a team that can win the NL East. After fixing my issues at 3B (Jake Lamb) and adding some depth to the lineup (Corey Dickerson) I was looking for a true ace to add to my one-two punch Bauer/Greinke. I had talks with a number of teams over quite some interesting names and am super happy that Strasburg is the one coming over to Queens. His injury problems are notorious but my depth at MLB SP should make this a non-issue when he takes his yearly DL stint. Other than that he is a top 25 SP when on the mound and with the new playoff rules for setting a pitching rotation a combination of Bauer, Greinke and Strasburg makes me feel quite strong. Of course...if I reach the playoffs that is.
My organization gives three young hopeful players in this trade. Gimenez was the fake Mets top prospect and is currently ranked #55 in the MLBpipeline Top 100 but was also taken 12th some weeks ago in a prospect mock draft which was performed by some of the industry´s most reputable MILB experts. Although only 20 years of age he should reach the Majors soon and make immediate impact with his hitting tool and speed. He is one of the true elite SS prospects and as a Mets fan myself I don´t like to see him go to a division rival - but seeing the return it was out of the question that my top prospect had to be in the mix.
Anthony Gonsolin is a starting pitcher who is flying a bit under the radar. Currently ranked as the #14 prospect in the LA Dodgers system he had a true breakout year in 2018 with a 2.60 ERA and 155 Ks in 128 IP across two levels (A+ and AA). He is about MLB ready and should become a real nice piece for Washington´s rebuild efforts.
About 12 months ago Jeremy Eierman was touted as a sure fire top 10 pick in the 2018 amateur draft. His well documented issues handling the change from aluminium to wooden bats made him fall to the later rounds but make no mistake if he figures things out he should be a quick moving top prospect at the left side of the infield. His combination of power and speed (8 bombs and 10 SB in 62 games at professional level so far) together with his advanced age makes him a candidate to enter Oakland´s MLB roster within the next 2-3 years.
We thank the Nationals GM for the always open minded trade talks and wish Andres, Anthony and Jeremy lots of success in their future career.
Welcome to the Big Apple, Stephen and as always let´s go Mets!
