DBacks get: Brennon Lund CF/LF LAA - $0.2m Ken Giles RP HOU - $3.18/$4.77mx4yrs/UFA
Cubs get: Blaise Salter 1B DET - $0.2m
I extended Giles this past off-season in hopes he could carry my bullpen as an elite closer, but he's had a rough season and was recently demoted by the Astros. As much as I'd like to hold onto him in hopes he returns to elite closer status, I'm fighting for a World Series this year and just can't afford the roster spot. So I'm giving up a decent prospect Lund in exchange for the DBacks taking Giles off my hands. He's a pretty decent bounce back candidate at just 27 years old and could return to elite closer status for future seasons. Obviously there's risk that comes with that potential rewards though. Salter is just included to even out the total farm players involved. He will be released by the Cubs.

The D-Backs accept this trade.
It's basically a crap shoot that a team not in the playoff hunt can make. Taking Giles and hoping he returns to form, or something close, is worth the risk/reward in order to get a decent prospect in Lund. Lund is a decent OF who more than likely fits the 4th outfielder type mold and is currently at AA ball.
Giving up on Salter, who is not hitting this year at AA and is 25 was a no brainer. Our farm system is farther ahead with this deal and we have a shot at a possible closer who is not over priced.
