After on and off negotiations that basically started almost 2 months ago, but in earnest about a week ago, the Mets and Diamondbacks have come to an agreement on the following trade.....
The Mets get:
Jordan Montgomery, SP, Yankees. 2018/1M 2019/2M 2020/ARB1
Jay Bruce, RF, Mets. 2018/21M 2019/21M 2020/21M 2021/21M
Andres Gimenez, SS, Mets. 2019/.2M - prospect
The D-Backs get:
Mike Clevinger, SP, Indians. 2018/4M 2019/ARB1
Jason Heyward, RF, Cubs. 2018/21.5M 2019/20M 2020/21M 2021/21M 2022/22M 2023/22M
Blaise Salter, 1B, Tigers. 2018/.2M - prospect
Ronald Rosario, CF, Mariners. 2018/.2M - prospect
Ramon Marcelino, RF, Rockies. 2018/.2M - prospect
Daniel Jipping, LF/CF/RF, Rockies. 2018/.2M
As a team you always dislike parting with quality talent. Monty is a talented young SP who pitches with a very good team behind him. Bruce has always produced and is very projectable. Gimenez is a young talent that has begun to appear on some of the Top 100 lists. We hope all do well for the Mets.
As for the return in this deal, we feel that Clevinger is one of the top young, talented pitchers out there, with one of the most talented teams behind him. Even though he could start this year in the bullpen, because of the staff he is a part of, this was a long term investment in a player who will be a starter for us for many years to come. Heyward is a risk/reward chance we are taking. Hitting instructor Chili Davis has been working with him all winter. If this is fruitful and gets him back to his pre 2016 form, it will be worth it. At 28 there is no reason his talent couldn't carry him another 5 or 6 years. As for the 4 prospects we receive in this deal the closest is probably Salter in Detroit. He is the best 1B in their system and V-Mart & Miggy are both showing their age. He could get a shot as soon as 2019 to make the job his. The others are talented OF prospects that are still a good bit off. Basically we feel as though we dealt 1 talented lottery ticket for 4.
Thanks to Kai of the Mets for keeping the long running negotiations going. It was fun and gave us a few laughs along the way. That is how negotiations should be.
