It's not too often you see a deal between two teams in the same division, but the Brewers and Cubs did just that a few moments ago. The Brewers receive: - Steven Brault, SP, PIT - 18/1 19/2 20/ARB1 21/ARB2 22/ARB3 23/UFA
- Victor Arano, RP, PHI - 18/0.5 19/1 20/2 21/ARB1 22/ARB2 23/ARB3 24/UFA
- Cody Poteet, SP, MIA - 0.2 minors
- Gerson Moreno, RP, DET - 0.2 minors
The Cubs receive:
- Yordan Alvarez, 1B, HOU - 0.2 minors
- Starling Heredia, OF, LAD - 0.2 minors
The Brewers have been looking for rotation options and Brault fits that bill. Whether or not he starts the year in the rotation is yet to be seen but he has some experience there and has had success there in the minors. He's young, hopefully he gets consistent playing time to continue his development.
Arano was lights out during his late-season call up last season and has future closer written all over him. Moreno has a live arm as well, and although farther away from the bigs, could also find himself closing out games in short order.
Poteet has progressed nicely thus far in the minors and could find his way to the majors in a year or two after some more development.
Yordan and Starling are both a year or more away from the big leagues but have bright futures in front of them. The Brewers wish them the best with their new team.

Thanks for the deal Jerry. I’m basically just trading from some depth to get a couple offensive prospects that I prefer. Both Alvarez and Heredia are likely to be a couple years away but high upside guys that should climb the ranks along the way. I actually drafted Heredia and had to include him as a piece in a bigger trade to the Angels last year. But I’d wanted him back ever since so needed to take the opportunity while I could. I’m notorious for trader’s regret and wanting my guys back later... (Just see how manny times McMahon was traded last year). Alvarez is the better of the two prospects. I really like his upside and I expect him to be climbing the prospect ranks over the next year. He could be a longer term option in my lineup or more likely a trade chip down the road.
Thanks for the deal. Best of luck to the Brewers.
