Well, we did it! We survived Year 1! And Jerry didn’t kill me! After 68 trades (those involving players at least), the Cards finished the year a pedestrian 74-88. But overall, ownership is happy with the season and the progress of the roster. We were competitive in late season series vs division rivals Reds and Cubs, which we feel like was a good sign.
As many know, the squad was not what we would have chose when we inherited it. Far too many Twins. Like FAR TOO MANY TWINS! 28 fucking Twins I think. The starting rotation also had Snell and Berrios, two players I always think are overrated in fantasy. We were dead on with our Snell accessment, grabbing future rotation anchors Sale and Baz for him along with burgeoning prospect Contreras, who we aren’t sure of quite yet but looked good in a short MLB daybutt. Berrios would have been nice to hold onto probably, but netted top prospects Bart and Casas (who turned into Veen)!
But overall, the year was about the churn. After all, it didn’t cost nothing!! Sold low on some players (Wainwright and Lauer prime examples) but as the messiah Farhan Zaidi says, the goal is to win more transactions than you lose. Actually he doesn’t say that. He says the goal is to make one smart baseball decision after another. And we believe we did that.
We feel like we got some gems. Mullins was stolen from the eventual champion Angels for Romo and turned into Nellie Cruz. Doval was procured at the perfect moment. Hilliard turned in a decent second half after we acquired him and will retain triple OF eligibility for ‘22. Cortes Jr. is an intriguing spot starter. Waiver claim Tromp is in a new organization. Villar just set the Richmond HR record. Aeverson turned into a prospect of some note. Even Khris Davis has come back to the majors and not been turrible.
Going into ‘22, Cards will continue to be active, but plan to be more measured in our approach, focusing on fine-turning the roster rather than moving bodies. Since this is a points league, the early parts of the rebuild were focused on the pitching side. Sale and Darvish hopefully will return to their dominant ways and form a formidable two-headed ace monster at the top of the rotation, backed by Miley and Odorizzi. Baz and Contreras should be up at some point to contribute solid innings. The pride and joy of the churn is the bullpen, and the organization is excited to have potential closers in Doval and Rainey (maybe even Williams if Hader is traded and Williams can stop fighting walls)!! For the lineup, the stars will be Buxton, Polanco, Cruz, and Duvall with depth surrounding them. Will probably need to add at least two infielders, at least until Miranda is ready. Hopefully if we look good at the start of the season we can add some rentals.
It’s an exciting day for the Cards org. Onward and upward!! Our scouts are busy scouting FYPD talent, hoping to make some noise with our 20 draft picks. ✌️
